What state is NC?

NC is North Carolina. It is the two-letter USPS code for the state of North Carolina, whose capital city is Raleigh.

NC belongs to the most crowded corner of the postal system. Eight state codes begin with the letter N, matched only by the eight that begin with M, so the character after the N is doing all of the identifying work.

Why the code is NC

When two-letter codes were fixed in October 1963, three months after ZIP codes began, the rule for a two-word state name was to take the initial of each word. North Carolina yields N and C. Nothing pulled from inside the word North would have worked, because North Dakota would have produced the same letters.

That rule solves the whole N block, which is where the design pressure sat. NC and ND take their second letter from the second word. NH, NJ, NM and NY do the same, except that in those four the N stands for New rather than North. Nevada, a single word, takes N and the V from the third position. Nebraska is the only N state given the plain first two letters, and even that was not settled at once: the original 1963 list printed Nebraska as NB, and the Postal Service revised it to NE in 1969 after NB proved to clash with New Brunswick on cross-border mail.

North Carolina itself needed no revision. It had been set in print as N.C. for generations, and the reform removed the periods and left the letters alone.

Codes people confuse with NC

CodeStateWhy the mix-up happens
SCSouth CarolinaOne colony until it was divided in 1712, one shared second word, and one letter of difference. Voice assistants and handwriting both fail here regularly.
NDNorth DakotaSame North prefix, and the two states sit far apart, so nothing about the geography helps you check the answer.
NENebraskaThe only N code lifted straight from the first two letters, breaking the pattern the rest of the block follows. It was NB until 1969.
NVNevadaAnother single-word N state, but its second letter comes from the middle of the name rather than a second word.
NH, NJ, NM, NYNew Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New YorkIdentical shape to NC, but here the N is New. Four codes that look like directions and are not.
