Frequently Asked Questions

About Statedoku, the daily US states puzzle

What is Statedoku?

Statedoku is a free daily puzzle game that combines Sudoku's grid logic with American geography. Every day, you get a 3×3 grid where each cell must be filled with a US state that satisfies both the row and column constraints. Each state can be used only once.

Is Statedoku free to play?

Yes. No account, no signup, no subscription. Just open statedoku.com and play. A new puzzle drops every day at midnight (your local time).

How is Statedoku different from Wordle or Sudoku?

Wordle is about guessing a 5-letter word. Sudoku is about placing numbers so each row, column, and 3×3 box has 1–9. Statedoku borrows Sudoku's uniqueness rule but replaces numbers with US states, and adds constraint labels on each row and column (like "borders Mexico" or "has an NBA team"). It tests geography knowledge instead of vocabulary or pure logic.

How many mistakes am I allowed?

You get 3 mistakes per day. After the third wrong guess, the puzzle locks and reveals the full solution. The dot counter (●●● at the top) shows your remaining tries. Come back the next day for a new puzzle.

Why a new puzzle every day?

Daily puzzles create a shared, fair experience: everyone in the world plays the same grid on the same day. It's also a small fun ritual — like a daily crossword. The puzzle is deterministic from the date, so two players on the same day see the exact same grid and can compare results.

Does Statedoku work on mobile?

Yes. Statedoku is built mobile-first with a responsive grid, large tap targets, safe-area insets for iPhone notches, and a bottom-sheet input. You can also add it to your home screen as a Progressive Web App for an app-like experience (no install through an App Store needed).

What languages does Statedoku support?

English, French, Spanish. State names and constraint labels are translated, but the geographic content remains US-focused. Switch languages with the EN / FR / ES buttons in the top right.

How do I share my result?

After solving, click the share button on the victory banner. You'll get a copyable text grid with 🟩 (correct), 🟥 (wrong attempts), and ⬜ (empty). Paste it on Twitter, WhatsApp, Discord, or anywhere — same vibe as Wordle's classic share style.

Are my game progress and stats stored on a server?

No. Everything is stored locally in your browser. Statedoku does not have a database or user accounts. Your progress, streak, and best time stay on your device. If you switch devices, the data does not sync — that's the privacy trade-off we picked. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Can I play yesterday's puzzle?

Yes. Open the Archive page from the footer. You'll see a calendar of every past date — click any day to play that puzzle. Your progress per date is saved separately, so you can come back later. Future dates are locked until midnight UTC.

Who made Statedoku?

Statedoku is an independent indie project, hosted on Cloudflare Pages, open to feedback. Contact: [email protected].
