NV is Nevada. Carson City is the capital, Las Vegas is the largest city, and Nevada was admitted to the Union on October 31, 1864, as the 36th state.
Why the code is NV
Eight state names start with N, tying the M states for the biggest pile-up on the postal list. When the Post Office Department cut every state to two letters in October 1963, so that a city, a state and a ZIP code would fit on one address line, that N block had to be split eight ways with almost no room to work in.
The four New states were easy. New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico and New York each took the N and the initial of the second word: NH, NJ, NM, NY. North Carolina and North Dakota did the same trick with a compass word instead: NC and ND. That left two single-word states, Nebraska and Nevada, which share their first two letters. Only one could have NE. Nebraska got it.
Nevada therefore reached to the third letter. N-e-v-a-d-a gives the v, and NV was the result. It is one of the very few codes that breaks the pattern of the block it sits in, which is exactly why people guess wrong: seeing NV, the mind reaches for a state beginning with New, and there is not one. The older written form was Nev., still used in court citations and press datelines, and that spelling carries the same v that ended up in the code.

Where you will see NV
On mail. Nevada ZIP codes sit in the 889 to 898 block, so Las Vegas NV 89101 and Reno NV 89501 both name the state twice. Carson City takes 897, a reminder that the capital has its own routing range despite its size.
In company filings. Nevada is one of the states businesses most often choose to incorporate in, so NV turns up in registration lines and legal footers for companies with no office anywhere near the state. If an address ends in NV but the business seems to operate elsewhere, this is usually why.
Not in sports. Franchises here carry the city name: the Golden Knights are VGK, the Raiders and the Aces are Las Vegas teams. The state letters appear mainly in university names, UNLV and UNR, where they stand for Nevada spelled out rather than for the postal code.
In crosswords. "Reno's state, briefly" and "Silver St." both point to NV. The clue almost always names a city, because the state itself is easier to identify by its towns.
