State Capitals Match

Match 10 US states with their capitals.

Solved0/10 Mistakes0
Match the 10 states with their capitals

Ten states in the left column, ten capitals in the right, and you pair them by tapping one from each side. Two to three minutes per board, and unlike a typing quiz it trains recall in both directions at once.

How to play

Tap a state, then tap the capital you believe belongs to it. A correct pair locks green and stops responding.

Clear the four easy pairs first

Four of these ten capitals are also the largest city in their own state, which is exactly why most people already know them: Phoenix, Boise, Jackson and Cheyenne. Lock those four in before you touch anything else and the board shrinks from ten rows to six.

The remaining six are all capitals that lose to a bigger city, and they are where every mistake comes from. Anchor each one to the city that beats it. Saint Paul sits behind Minneapolis, Helena behind Billings, Lincoln behind Omaha, Santa Fe behind Albuquerque, Raleigh behind Charlotte, Bismarck behind Fargo. Two specific traps deserve naming. Minnesota is Saint Paul, never Minneapolis, even though Minneapolis is the bigger half of the pair. And Bismarck belongs to North Dakota, while South Dakota's Pierre is not on this board at all, so a Dakota tile can only ever resolve to Bismarck.

If the largest city hook does not stick, use a second one. Four of these ten capitals are named after people: Lincoln for Abraham Lincoln, Jackson for Andrew Jackson, Raleigh for Sir Walter Raleigh, and Bismarck for Otto von Bismarck. The other six take their names from places, features or legends, and one of them is worth a fact of its own. Santa Fe is both the oldest of the fifty state capitals and the highest above sea level, which is a useful tag for a tile that otherwise looks interchangeable with Helena.
