No Income Tax Quiz

No Income Tax Quiz asks you to click the nine states that levy no tax on personal income. It is the single most useful map in the relocation debate, and a full board takes about a minute and a half.

How to play

Press Start and click states on the map. Each of the nine correct states fills green and advances the Solved counter. Any state that does tax income fills red and adds one to the mistake counter, which allows five. On the fifth mistake the run ends and the targets you missed are revealed in amber. There is no timer. The score becomes stars at 90, 60 and 30 percent of nine, so all nine earns three stars and six earns two. Best score and streak are stored in your browser.

Where the five mistakes usually go

The nine split into two clean clusters plus one outlier. West and northern plains: Alaska, Washington, Nevada, Wyoming, South Dakota. South: Texas, Tennessee, Florida. The outlier is New Hampshire, the only one in New England and the state most players never click.

• The big trap is confusing no income tax with no sales tax. Only five states have no general sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon. Just Alaska and New Hampshire are on both lists, so Oregon, Montana and Delaware each cost you a mistake.
• Alaska and New Hampshire are therefore the only two states with neither a personal income tax nor a statewide sales tax.
• Nevada gets mixed up with Utah and Idaho, which both tax income, and Wyoming with Colorado and Montana, which do too.
• Tennessee counts, but its neighbours do not. It used to tax interest and dividends under the Hall tax, repealed in full in 2021.
• Washington counts even though it taxes long term capital gains. Its neighbour Oregon does not count.
