Confederate States Quiz

Confederate States Quiz turns a Civil War roster into a map exercise: find all 11 states that joined the Confederacy, and leave alone the slave states that stayed in the Union. Most players clear it in under two minutes.

How to play

Press Start and click states directly on the map. Each of the 11 targets fills green and moves the Solved counter. A state that never seceded fills red and costs one of five mistakes. On the fifth mistake the run ends and any Confederate state you had not found lights up amber. There is no timer. The result scores as stars at 90, 60 and 30 percent of 11, so nine correct earns two stars and ten earns three. Best score and daily streak are saved in your browser only.

Where the mistakes come from

The 11 form one unbroken block running from Texas east along the Gulf to Florida, then up the Atlantic coast to Virginia. If your green states leave a hole in the middle of that block, the hole is a state you still owe. If a green state sits outside it, you clicked wrong.

• West Virginia is the hardest single click on the board. It separated from Virginia during the war and entered the Union in 1863, so the target is Virginia and West Virginia is a mistake.
• Four slave states never left: Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky and Missouri. All four are wrong clicks.
• Kentucky and Missouri had rival Confederate governments and were counted on the Confederate flag, which carries 13 stars for 11 states. The map does not count them.
• Oklahoma was Indian Territory during the war, and Arizona and New Mexico were territories too, so none of them appear as targets.
• Kansas is the other frequent slip. It entered the Union as a free state in 1861, the same year most of the Confederacy seceded.
• Texas is the only one of the 11 that had governed itself as an independent republic before joining the Union.

Secession order, first to last

Montgomery, Alabama served as the first Confederate capital before the seat moved to Richmond, Virginia in 1861. The first seven states left before the attack on Fort Sumter. The last four, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina and Tennessee, went only after it. Tennessee seceded last and was also the first of the 11 readmitted to the Union, in 1866.
