Why the code is GA
Georgia does not begin with G and A. It begins with G and E. The code is the first letter of the name joined to the last, the same construction used for ME in Maine and MD in Maryland. It also preserves Ga., the form that atlases, gazetteers and newspaper datelines had used for well over a century before the postal service picked it up.
Georgia had a free hand that most states did not. It is the only state whose name starts with G, so no rival needed a distinguishing letter and no compromise was forced. Contrast that with Missouri and Montana, which both open M and O and had to be split into MO and MT, or with the four New states, which had to be told apart by their second word.
When the Post Office Department published its list of two-letter abbreviations in October 1963, the goal was narrow: ZIP Codes had gone live that summer, and a city, a state and five digits had to fit on one address line. The list covered US mail and nothing else. It was never designed to sit alongside international country codes, and the Republic of Georgia was assigned GE under that separate system. One name, two standards, two letters that do not match. That gap is the reason the question gets typed into search bars at all.

Sports coverage uses it constantly because Atlanta carries four professional franchises. Datelines read Atlanta, GA for the Braves in baseball, the Falcons in football, the Hawks in basketball and Atlanta United in soccer. College coverage adds a wrinkle of its own, since UGA stands for the University of Georgia while GA on its own still means the state.
Forms are where the state-versus-country problem bites hardest. Any shipping or billing form that asks separately for a country and a state can accept Georgia in either field, and picking the wrong one sends a parcel to the wrong hemisphere. Crossword grids play the ambiguity for fun instead, cluing GA through the Peach State one week and through gallium the next.
