Clues that catch solvers out
- Augusta. The capital is Maine's. Georgia also has an Augusta, but it is not a seat of government.
- Columbus. The capital is Ohio's. Georgia has a Columbus too, and it is not the answer.
- Charleston. The capital is West Virginia's. The larger and more famous Charleston is in South Carolina, whose capital is Columbia.
- Salem. The capital is Oregon's, at 5 letters. The Salem most people picture is in Massachusetts, whose capital is Boston.
- Kansas City. Missouri's largest city, but Missouri governs from Jefferson City, the longest capital name at 13 letters.
- Longest state name. Massachusetts, North Carolina and South Carolina all fill 13 squares, so a 13-letter clue needs the rest of the wording to break the tie.
